Live calculator
The Roofing Calculator helps contractors and homeowners estimate roofing material quantities for different roof types and materials. Calculate bundles, panels, fasteners, and material costs for shingles, metal, tile, and other roofing systems.
Accurate roofing estimates prevent material shortages and cost overruns. The calculator accounts for roof pitch, waste factors, and material-specific coverage to provide precise quantity estimates.
Enter roof area, pitch, and material type to calculate required quantities. The tool supports multiple roofing materials including asphalt shingles, metal panels, tile, slate, and membrane roofing, with automatic waste factor calculations based on roof complexity.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
One square (100 sq ft) requires 3 bundles of standard 3-tab shingles or 3-4 bundles of architectural shingles. Add 10-15% waste factor. For 1,500 sq ft roof: 15 squares × 3 bundles = 45 bundles + 15% = ~52 bundles.
Roof pitch is rise over run (e.g., 4:12 means 4 inches rise per 12 inches run). Higher pitch increases actual roof area. Area = Horizontal Area ÷ cos(pitch angle).
Waste factors: Simple roofs 10%, Moderate complexity 12-15%, Complex (multiple valleys, hips) 15-20%, Very complex 20-25%. Waste accounts for cutting, overlaps, and mistakes.
Asphalt shingles, metal panels (standing seam, corrugated), tile (clay, concrete), slate, membrane (built-up, EPDM), roll roofing, and wood shingles. Each has different coverage and installation requirements.
