Live calculator
The EUI Calculator helps architects and engineers evaluate building energy performance by calculating Energy Use Intensity and comparing against benchmark values for similar building types.
EUI (Energy Use Intensity) measures annual energy consumption per square foot, providing a normalized metric to compare buildings of different sizes. Lower EUI values indicate better energy efficiency.
Enter your building's total energy consumption and floor area to calculate EUI. Compare against benchmarks for your building type to understand performance relative to typical buildings and high-performance targets.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Average US office EUI is about 90 kBtu/sf/year. ENERGY STAR certified offices are typically below 75 kBtu/sf/year. High-performance buildings achieve 50-60 kBtu/sf/year, while net-zero buildings target under 30.
EUI = Total Annual Energy (kBtu) ÷ Gross Floor Area (sf). Convert all fuels to kBtu first: electricity kWh × 3.412 = kBtu; natural gas therms × 100 = kBtu.
Site EUI measures energy consumed at the building. Source EUI accounts for generation and transmission losses—electricity is multiplied by ~3 to reflect power plant inefficiency. Source EUI enables fair comparison between all-electric and gas buildings.
Code EUI requirements vary by jurisdiction and building type. ASHRAE 90.1-2019 typically results in EUIs of 35-85 kBtu/sf depending on building type. Some jurisdictions require annual reporting above certain EUI thresholds.
