The Window Types Calculator helps architects and designers compare different window types by operation method, ventilation capacity, air infiltration, water penetration resistance, cleaning access, and egress compliance.

Window selection affects building performance, occupant comfort, and code compliance. Different window types offer varying levels of ventilation, weather resistance, and operability. Understanding these differences helps select appropriate windows for each application.

Browse window types including awning, casement, dual-action, double-hung, sliding, and fixed windows. Compare performance characteristics including ventilation percentage, air infiltration, water penetration resistance, cleaning difficulty, and egress compliance to make informed window selections.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Awning and casement windows provide 100% ventilation when fully open. Double-hung and sliding windows provide 50% ventilation. Fixed windows provide no ventilation.

Fixed windows have best weather resistance (no moving parts). Casement windows seal well when closed. Sliding and double-hung windows may have more air infiltration.

Most operable windows meet egress if they provide minimum opening size (5.7 sq ft, 24" min height, 20" min width). Fixed windows don't meet egress unless combined with operable units.

Consider: ventilation needs (operable vs. fixed), weather exposure (sealing quality), cleaning access (interior vs. exterior), egress requirements, and architectural style. Balance these factors for each location.
